ソラニン
Today, me and the bois gathered. We went to the first cafe, ate something and then moved to the karaoke. We spent 2 hours to scream our souls out, then walked to a restaurant, again, we fueled ourselves and then, guess what? We went back to karaoke and spent an extra hour there, lol.
I wanna tell you about a song, a sad song that we always sing out loud when we’re together, “Solanin” (ソラニン) written by Inio Asano (Japanese manga artist, go check his manga if you’re a deep thinker) for Asian Kung-Fu Generation as the soundtrack of the live action version of the manga with same title. I discovered this song on 2011, a year after it was released. Frankly, Solanin was my first AKG song other than Haruka Kanata (遥か彼方), because, who in the world that didn’t know that song? One of the best Naruto opening song, Lmao. On 2011, i started to search more AKG songs because i rewatched Naruto series on that time and figured out, this band suits my taste.
Solanin is a manga about a young couple that lived in their quarter life crisis and lost in their early adulthood, Meiko and Taneda. They went to same university, fell in love and decided to live together. Taneda really wanted to be a rockstar, and Meiko is giving her support for him. But you know, sometimes, a dream is just a dream, you can’t really achieve it. After their graduation, Meiko worked as an office lady in a company while Taneda only worked as a part timer magazine editor. Meiko really hated her job and decided to quit. She talked to Taneda when he’s sleeping about quitting her job, and Taneda unconsciously replied “just quit your job, we will be okay because we’re together, we’ll figure it out later”, Meiko smiled and sent her resignation letter the day after.
When they’re having dinner in their apartment, Meiko said that she quit her job and Taneda lost his shit, lol. Taneda, later decided to quit his and focusing on their earlier band project “Rotti” with Billy and Katō. He wrote the song “Solanin” for the band’s project, and Meiko once asked, “hey, what’s Solanin about?” He dumbly replied, “It’s a song about a poison that sprout on potatoes” Lol, but that’s literally right because solanin (actually solanine) is some kind of poison that can be found on potato.
Rotti recorded Solanin as their demo and sent it to various potential labels in Tokyo. Weeks later, one of the label asked them to come and negotiate about future plans. Meiko, Taneda, and Billy decided to come, but ironically, their song is not the point of that discussion, the label manager asked Rotti to be a band that will collaborate with a gravure idol because she is popular and would gain immediate sellout. Meiko was so upset and rejected that offer inmediately. Taneda later met the label manager in the toilet, he asked him, “i think i know who you are, you’re a famous musician and i adore you. Why are you doing this kind of business now?” He replied, “I got the same pride as you at that time, but now my pride is just a pride, sometime you must kill your pride for better living, live goes on”. Well, that answer hit the nail on the head. I also stuck on my pride on my early adulthood, but now, it’s not really matter.
Taneda feel stressed, few days after he asked Meiko to come with him, they rent a boat in a lake to calm their mind, but later he had an argument with Meiko on the boat and they fell off the lake. He ran away from their apartment for at least 3 days and didn’t contact Meiko at all because his phone was broken. Meiko sickened because she was so sad. Billy and Katō helped Meiko on her bad times. Taneda later contacted her with his new phone, and said that he will be back shortly. But on his way back, he wondered, “Am i really happy? Am i okay? What is happines by the way?” He cried, in his mind he said “I’m happy! Yes i am!“ accelerated his scooter through the red traffic light, crashed, and died.
Meiko, was shocked and depressed, she nearly killed herself but Billy came on the right time. But weeks after, Meiko said to Billy and Katō that she want to continue the band. They asked Meiko, “are you sure? You can’t even play guitar and sing” Meiko replied, “yes, about the singing and guitar part, i’ll figure it out later”. They agreed and took Meiko to studio, taught Meiko to set up the amp and they shooked because Meiko’s amp settings is really close to Taneda’s. When she learned the song Solanin, Meiko figured about the song, that’s a song about letting something or someone go, and Taneda immediately came to her mind.
They decided to set up a final gig for Rotti as a tribute to Taneda in certain live house, and later Rotti was disbanded. In the end, Meiko could erase her sadness about Taneda and living her new live, yep, that's Solanin about, letting someone go to live your new life.
There’s so much other tales that i didn’t mention on the post because its going to be soooooo long if i included it lol. For you guys who feel down and stressed on your 20’s, you better read the manga or watch the movie, maybe it would ease your anxiety because it’s not only you that struggle in your early adulthood, everybody else feel that way too. Don’t stop trying, goodnight!
Ps: this post is dedicated for Sali. Cheer up!
